Water Outlet Culture of Laotian Village In traditional village layout, the water outlet refers to the inflow and outflow of river water. Ancient people believed that water flow was closely related to the village’s fortune and spiritual aura, serving as the lifeline of the settlement. In pursuit of harmony between humanity and nature, locals would adjust the orientation of buildings to place houses at auspicious sites aligned with the water outlet, so as to attract wealth and blessings. By contrast, locations mismatched with the water layout were regarded as inauspicious sites that might bring adverse influences. Essentially, this ancient site-selection philosophy reflects the reverence for water environments and the ingenious utilization of natural water systems by ancestors.
